 Street Department

The Athens City Street Department is the city's road maintenance and traffic control agency. We are located in the City Service Garage on the west side of Athens at 387 West State Street, next to the City Water Treatment Plant. The Department is responsible for upkeep of the city's roads and rights-of-way and is also responsible for the regular maintenance of all the city's vehicles. Daily responsibilities include, on average, repair of potholes in city streets, inspection of construction contracted by the city, collection and disposal of organic yard waste, trimming of trees, cleaning of city streets, and upkeep of traffic signs.

Street Department fluctuates between 22 and 30 employees – The director, two street maintenance specialists, eleven street maintenance technicians, three master mechanics, one utilities/infrastructure inspector, one secretary, one administrative intern, and the city "street electrician" and his assistant.  In the summer we hire between three and ten seasonal maintenance workers.

Divisions of the Street Department include the Street Maintenance Division, Internal Service, and Electrical Traffic Control.
