IN PROGRESS:

West Union Street Infrastructure Improvements - City Project Number 280

Description of the Project and Location:

This project includes a complete resurfacing and remarking of West Union Street between Shafer Street and High Street along with repairs to curbs and sidewalks, intersection adjustments at Smith and Depot and traffic signal improvements at Shafer. Existing 4" and 10" waterlines will be replaced with 12" lines.

West Union Sustainable Stormwater Interceptor Enhancements

The West Union Street Improvements Project also includes three components to treat stormwater:

  • A manufactured water quality system will be installed to treat stormwater generated from the City's west side.  The system will remove sand, floatable organic material, trash, and oil from stormwater runoff before it is discharged to a tributary of Oxbow Creek, the receiving water for the west side's stormwater.
  • A restoration project will be completed to the tributary to Oxbow Creek, located near Depot Street and Ohio University's Life Sciences Building.  This component of the project includes removing a section of concrete lining, installing cobbles and large stones to slow velocity, removing invasive species and planting native species along the riparian area.
  • Biofiltration boxes will be installed on West Union Street, between Smith Street and Depot Street, to reduce the quantity and improve the quality of stormwater entering the manufactured water quality system.

The stormwater enhancements project was financed in part through a grant from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency under the provisions of the Surface Water Improvement Fund.

Questions or concerns may be directed to the City of Athens Engineering and Public Works, 740-593-7636.

Columbus Road Bikepath Spur - City Project Number 270

Description of the Project and Location:

The purpose of this project is to create a viable bicycle and pedestrian route between the Hockhocking? Adena Bikeway and the Columbus Road area of Athens (and points beyond).

Thompson Excavation, the trail Contractor for the Columbus Road Bikepath Spur Project, is expected to begin construction activities for the project the week of March 7, 2016.

The Columbus Road Bikepath Spur Project will connect the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway near Currier Street to the Columbus Road area of the city, near Columbus Circle, through construction of a new non-motorized bridge over the Hocking River.

The project will be managed in phases.

  • Phase 1 - Trail Work, is scheduled to occur between early March and July 2016.  This phase includes trail construction, and the installation of stormwater structures.

  • Phase 2 - Bridge Work and Finish Trail Work, is scheduled to be completed June through October 2016.  The Contractor for this phase is the Righter Company, and work includes all bridge-related items, final grading and paving of the trail, and railing installation.

This significant improvement project has been in planning and design since 2012 and is funded through the City of Athens, the Ohio Department of Transportation's Transportation Alternatives Program, and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Clean Ohio Trails Fund.

The bikepath is expected to remain open during the construction of the spur.

Questions or concerns may be directed to the City of Athens Engineering and Public Works Department, 740-593-7636.
