What to do during a flood
(adapted from the Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM)):
If you have not evacuated your home, move to the highest floor or roof, and call for help
Do not walk or drive through flowing water
Six inches of moving water can knock you off your feet. Two feet of moving water can sweep a car away. Drowning is the number one cause of flood deaths. If you walk in standing water, first check for fallen or live power wires in the water. Do not enter the water if downed power lines are present! Use a pole or stick to locate the ground before stepping into the standing water.
Stay away from power lines and electrical wires
The number two killer after drowning is electrocution. Electrical current can travel through water. Report downed power lines to the appropriate electric company (American Electric Power's 24 hour power outage reporting number is 1-800-277-2177).
Stay clear of unstable stream banks
