Water Treatment

The water section is responsible for the city's public water utilities. Comprised of 16 full-time employees and four major facilities, the water section is one of the largest subdivision of the Department of Public Works. The section is tasked with maintaining the city's water pipes and mains, treating and sanitizing water for public consumption, treating and disposing of waste water, and protecting the city's in-ground water supply.
Water Treatment
City water is treated at the Water Treatment Plant at 395 W. State Street. At this facility, groundwater is chemically treated and aerated to both sanitize and purify it, ensuring potability. One manager, five full-time maintenance technicians, three professional mechanics and a lab technician ensure the highest quality of treatment of water prior to public consumption. There is also a technical lab on East State St. where a full-time laboratory technician (shared with the water section) tests the city water supply to ensure compliance with municipal, state, and federal water safety standards.
Water Distribution
Through major pipes and conduits, water is carried from storage facilities and the Water Treatment Plant to the city streets and from there into private homes. A full time crew of six technicians maintains these mains, repairing leaks and bursts and installing connections into private homes.
Staff
The water section has a staff of 16 employees.
Our Facilities:
The major facilities of the water section are the water crew headquarters at 30 Curran Drive, the Water Treatment Plant at 395 West State St., and the technical lab on East State Street. Additionally, the water section maintains various wells, pumping stations, and other water-monitoring equipment all over the city.
