Athens City Council on 8-16-21 reactivated the requirement for face coverings in public spaces.

Based on information from the Centers for Disease Control, and the Athens City County Health Department regarding the substantial level of transmission and number of infections and hospitalizations, Athens City Council on 8-16-21 reactivated the requirement for face coverings in public spaces. This requirement applies to both vaccinated and unvaccinated persons.

The ordinance is effective immediately, and applies to all public spaces, including businesses and restaurants.  The face covering requirement is for indoor settings only. There is no mandate outdoors.   This mirrors Ohio University's and the Athens School District’s current policy.    For gyms, the expectation is when someone is not actively exercising to wear a mask.

Enforcement is complaint-driven. The city will not actively search for people not wearing masks.  The Penalty is a minor misdemeanor charged to an individual, not businesses.  Any violation is an administrative offense with a $100.00 fine.  If any person requests an appeal or does not pay the required administrative fine within 30 days, they will receive a minor misdemeanor citation.
