City of Athens Income Tax Department partners with the Ohio Attorney General for collections

Attorney General Program

In September 2019 the City of Athens Income Tax Department partnered with the Ohio Attorney General (AG) to collect delinquencies.  Accounts with past due balances can now be forwarded to the AG for collection.  Once an account has been forwarded to the AG’s office a 10-35% collection fee will be added.  Once a taxpayer has been contacted by the AG’s office all payments and correspondence will go through their office.  The Athens Income Tax Department will no longer be collecting the debt.

This program will be an addition resource for the Athens Income Tax Department in collection of past due accounts.  The City of Athens will still receive 100% of the past due amount as all collection costs are added to the balance due.  In addition, the AG’s office has the ability to seize refunds, lottery winnings and other revenue sources in order to pay the delinquencies.

If you have any questions concerning ordinance 0-86-19 and the contract with the AG’s office, please refer them to the Athens Income Tax Administrator, Tina Timberman at 740-592-3337 ext 2.
