Rules


  • Garbage containers must not be visible from the street on non-pickup days
  • Containers can be either bags or cans
  • Recycling can be put out the same day garbage is, just make sure crews can tell what is garbage and what is recycling
  • Watch for changes in pickup days due to holidays
  • Garbage must be out by 7:30 am

Garbage Rates 

    OWNER-OCCUPIED TRASH RATES

    Base Rate Owner Occupied Unit:                                                     $14.50  (1) 32 gallon container per week

    Base Rate Owner Occupied Unit:                                                     $21.00  (2) 32 gallon containers per week

    RENTAL TRASH RATES

    Base Rate for 1-3 permitted residents:                                           $21.00     (2) 32 gallon containers per week

    Base Rate for 4-6 permitted residents:                                           $24.00     (3) 32 gallon containers per week

    Base Rate for 7-9 permitted residents:                                           $25.50      (4) 32 gallon containers per week

    Base Rate for 10 or more permitted residents:                             $27.00      (5) 32 gallon containers per week

                    (Includes fraternities/sororities)                                                          ($4.80/add’l 32 gallon container)

    Extra bags placed @ curbside will be billed $5/bag.

    Other non-bagged items are classified as a Special Haul and will be charged a minimum fee of $15.00/ cubic yard.  Place the item(s) out on your normal pickup day and you will be billed accordingly-no need to notify us in advance.

    Trash cans cannot be placed @ the curb before dusk the day prior to pickup and must be removed from the curb no later than dusk of the day of pickup.  Trash cans must be stored out of sight from the street.

    Optional Compost Fee-All Water/Sewer accounts are charged $6.33/month/unit for (1) 5-gallon bucket picked up each week on the designated refuse pickup day (visit www.ci.athens.oh.us to view list).  In order to NOT be charged for compost service, customers must opt out of the program by emailing name and address to  compost@ci.athens.oh.us (cancelation will not go into effect until compost bucket is returned). 

    Litter Control Fee-All water/sewer accounts are charged a $1.00 fee per unit to cover the costs of a Solid Waste Inspector/Litter Control Officer.

    Cap Storm Sewer Fee-All water/sewer accounts are charged this fee to help the City maintain its Storm Water Sewer System.  For residential customers the fee is $2.00.  For commercial/industrial customers the fee is $4.00. 

    Franchise/Business Rates:  Rates shown are per business/store front and the number of trash pickups per week. 

    1 pickup per week-$42.00/month                                   5 pickups per week-$120.00/month

Base Rate


A base rate is established for each customer based on monthly peak consumption during the prior year.
  • If the "gallons used" box on your water bill read less than "15" (which is actually 15,000) every month last year, your base rate will not change this year.
  • If your water bill was for "15 gallons used" or more at least three times last year, you will have a new base rate.

A base rate is established for each customer based on monthly peak consumption during the prior year.  If the "gallons used" box on your water bill read less than "15" (which is actually 15,000) every month last year, your base rate will not change this year.  If your water bill was for "15 gallons used" or more at least three times last year, you will have a new base rate.  To determine your new base rate, look at the three largest quantities billed in "gallons used."   Refer to the chart above and use the smallest of the three numbers to determine which level will be used as your base rate.  For example, if your three largest "gallons used" last year were 19, 59 and 52, your base rate will be $31.90 for water and $46.33 for sewer.   If your three largest bills were 50, 59 and 52, your base rate will be $95.74 for water and $119.04 for sewer.  Each January, base rates are determined based on the prior year's consumption.  Customers can reduce their base rate for next year by conserving water this year.





The base rate applies to the first 1,000 gallons.          The following charges apply to each additional 1,000 gallons:
