Our Department Mission Statement
The City of Athens Engineering and Public Works Department conducts all-season maintenance of public rights of way and the city fleet, delivers high quality drinking water, and provides clean sewage removal in order to ensure the safety and well-being of the public.
Sections
The Engineering and Public Works Department is made up of ten sections.Administration
- Located at 30 Curran Drive
- Includes City Engineer, Director of Public Works, and one administrative coordinator
- Responsible for oversight and administration of all departmental activities, public outreach and interaction, intergovernmental coordination, dispatching, media coordination, strategic and tactical planning
Electrical Section
- Located at 387 West State Street
- Includes one electrician and one electrician trainee
- Responsible for maintenance and upkeep of city traffic signals, city-owned street lights, and all aerial city activities (banners, etc.)
- Shared between EPW and Lands and Buildings – conducts all electrical maintenance in buildings
Instrumentation Section
- Located at 30 Curran Drive
- Includes one instrument technician
- Responsible for control systems for both the water treatment and wastewater treatment plant, as well as lift stations, pump stations, and reservoirs
- Additional duties include assisting the city engineer with bridge inspections, land surveying activities, and automated traffic counts
- Located at 30 Curran Drive
- Includes Assistant City Engineer, and one project assistant
- Responsible for oversight of all capital improvements projects, contract management, grant administration, and private development review
Sewer Maintenance Section
- Located at 30 Curran Drive
- Includes five maintenance technicians and one sewer distribution supervisor
- Responsible for maintenance and upkeep of all public sewer and storm water drains throughout the city
Street Maintenance Section
- Located at 387 West State Street
- Includes 10 maintenance technicians and one street labor supervisor
- Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of all public rights of way in the city, including street maintenance, street sweeping, yard waste collection, mowing, snow and ice control, signage, parking meters, and general labor and construction
- Located at 38 East Park Drive (Athens Wastewater Treatment Plant)
- Includes one plant manager, one master mechanic, two plant mechanic / relief operators, and five operators
- Responsible for all treatment of city wastewater, plant maintenance, and remote site (lift stations) maintenance and operation
Water Maintenance Section
- Located at 30 Curran Drive
- Includes five maintenance technicians, two meter readers, and one water distribution supervisor
- Responsible for maintenance and upkeep of all waterlines in the city, the reading of water meters, and citywide backflow prevention
- Located at 395 West State Street (Athens Water Treatment Plant)
- Includes one plant manager, one master mechanic, two plant mechanic / relief operators, and five operators
- Responsible for all treatment of city domestic water production, plant maintenance, and remote site (wells, pump stations, tanks, and reservoirs) maintenance and operation, and the city wellhead protection program

Vehicle Maintenance Section
- Located at 387 West State Street
- Includes two vehicle master mechanics
- Responsible for maintenance and upkeep of all city vehicles, including EPW, APD, AFD, Arts Parks and Rec, Municipal Court, administration, and others as required
